30 May 2024
National Reconciliation Week
It’s National Reconciliation Week this week. This year’s theme is ‘Now More Than Ever’ and it’s a good time to take a moment to think about how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Reconciliation and justice for First Nations people must be part of our advocacy for a fairer and more inclusive NSW. As well as
acknowledging past abuses, NCOSS is committed to speaking out about current policies that perpetuate racism and inequality – such as laws that send children to prison.
Show your support for reconciliation this week by attending a local event, reading about truth telling, hosting a screening of a Reconciliation Film Club movie, and sharing National Reconciliation Week posters in your language. Regional Forum in Dubbo
Participants from 46 organisations from all over the Far West joined us for an incredible day at NCOSS’s regional forum in Dubbo last week. We heard from some fantastic speakers on topics ranging from how we keep our communities safe, tackling the housing and homelessness
challenges in Western NSW to how we can support a skilled social services sector. Thank you to our hosts Mission Australia - Central & Far West and to all our speakers and participants. Stay tuned for the next regional forum later in the year.

Emergency Preparedness - South Coast workshops
“What is possible when we work together to support vulnerable people to be well prepared for future disasters?” This was the question for attendees at two emergency preparedness workshops held in Bega and Moruya last week.
Delivered by local project leads, Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Service and the Eden Community Access Centre as part of the Community Sector Disaster Capability project, the workshops involved a range of social service and emergency service participants from local, regional and statewide roles as well as some community members.
Participants heard how emergency management operates locally and explored ways to support local preparedness and planning. The workshops were an important networking opportunity, with identified actions and connections providing the basis for further collaboration.
Topics discussed included building connections, knowledge and communication across silos, First Nations approaches, and the need
for recurrent funding to support disaster resilience. Disaster impacts on mental health, homelessness, domestic and family violence, and children were common themes.
The workshops were facilitated by experienced disaster resilience facilitators Dave Newell and Peter Pigott. A report on the workshops will be available in the coming weeks. Connections made and actions identified at the workshops provide the basis for future preparedness and planning by participating organisations. For more information, contact RebeccaE@katungul.org.au.
The Community Sector Disaster Capability Project is managed by NCOSS in collaboration with LCSA and AbSec and funded jointly by the Australian and NSW Governments through the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund.

Save the Welfare Rights Centre - petition
Caption: Text reads: "Community legal centres are forced to turn away over 200,000 people a year. We need government funding to meet the
need."
Welfare Rights Centre is the only specialist community legal centre in NSW that helps people in crisis situations with Centrelink. We offer free legal
assistance to vulnerable people to access payments and resolve unfair debts. For over 40 years our clients have included women leaving abusive relationships, persons with disability seeking to live independently in the community, youth completing higher education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as well as people and communities rebuilding their lives after natural disasters. Unless we secure urgent support from the Federal and NSW Governments, Welfare Rights Centre will lose 40% of its funding from 1 July 2024 and be forced to significantly reduce our staffing and service levels, including our First Nations Access Project.
Please sign
and share this petition if you believe that the government should ensure Welfare Rights Centre is adequately funded, so we can continue to help the most vulnerable people in our community.
