Ending violence against women
Over the weekend, thousands of people rallied around Australia calling for immediate action to stop the high rate of violence against women. This year so far, 27 women have been killed in violent incidents, including five women who were killed in the horrific attack at Bondi Junction shopping centre.
NCOSS supports the call for action to stop the rising rate of domestic and family violence. Key to this is funding specialist domestic and family violence services and building new affordable homes for women and children escaping violence.
The CEO of Domestic Violence NSW Delia Donovan said yesterday: "The NSW
government has already made commitments to address domestic and family violence through numerous plans and strategies. We’re asking them to fully fund these existing recommendations before conducting a large-scale inquiry such as a Royal Commission." Read DV NSW's media release here.

Regional Forum in Dubbo

Extension of portable long service leave submission
NCOSS is preparing our submission to the NSW Government on its Portable Long Service Leave scheme. We have been granted an extension for our submission, which means we are still accepting feedback from members about how this scheme will impact your organisation.

Welcome to a new staff member
Last week Justine Lee joined the NCOSS policy team. Her area of work will focus on the sustainability of our sector, in particular, the Secure Jobs, Funding Certainty Taskforce, Portable Long Service Leave scheme and Targeted Early Intervention recommissioning.
She has deep knowledge of the sector, having previously worked at Barnados, ACWA, Mission Australia and Family Planning NSW. Welcome to Justine!

NCOSS Submission - Inquiry on Community Safety

The NSW government is currently conducting an inquiry into community safety in regional and rural communities in NSW. More information is available here. Submissions are due on 31 May 2024.
NCOSS will be making a submission and will be holding an online consultation on 14 May.

Join in the conversation about how to reduce risk for regional communities in Western NSW.
NCOSS and local hosts Mission Australia in Dubbo would like to invite decision makers from social services, community organisations, lived experience advocates, and government agencies, including Local Government, from Western NSW to an interactive in person Regional Forum in Dubbo.
The focus of the day will be:
- Keeping communities safe and kids out of jail.
- Keeping communities housed.
- Workforce issues in the social service sector.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Dr Mindy Sotiri – CEO Justice Reform Initiative – Dr Sotiri will talk about what works to keep kids out of jail and communities safe.
- Michelle Craig - Manager Aboriginal Resource Unit, NSW Aboriginal Tenant Advice and Advocacy Services, Murra Mia Aboriginal Corporation – Michelle will highlight issues for Aboriginal renters in Western NSW.
- Rebecca Pinkstone – CEO Homes NSW – Rebecca will discuss how HomesNSW hopes to transform the way social and affordable housing is done to increase access, improve tenant experience, and collaborate with services on
the ground.
- Ben McAlpine Director Policy and Advocacy NCOSS – NCOSS sits on the Leadership Group for the Secure Jobs and Funding Certainty Taskforce. Ben will outline what positive outcomes the Taskforce might have for the sector in relation to sector staffing challenges in regional NSW.

Thank you to all those who have already completed our survey about the NSW Government's proposed portable long service leave scheme, thank you.
Because of the importance of getting this reform right, NCOSS has been granted an extension for our submission to allow extra time to consult with our members.
This means that we can keep our survey open until this Friday, 3 May. If you haven't done so already, can you please fill in our survey to tell us how this scheme will impact your organisation?
We are particularly keen to receive data related to actual Long Service Leave payments in recent years (Question 4), as this will help us understand the financial impact of the proposed levy.

National Child and Family Investment Strategy

Over the coming years, the National Child and Family Investment Strategy, (currently under development), will drive a shift in proportionate investment for child and family services delivered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, towards the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO) sector.
Families Australia have been
engaged by the Department of Social Services to undertake the ‘Changing the Balance’ research project which explores the potential impact on non-indigenous Non-Government Organisations
(NGOs). They have recently conducted a number of consultation sessions on the impacts of the transition.
Following on from the consultations, Families Australia have a short survey which gives opportunities for NGOs to provide further feedback. The survey is open until Friday 3 May 2024 and can be accessed here.
